Alexandria Planning Director Karl Moritz to retire after 16 years with city

Karl W. Moritz, Alexandria’s Director of Planning & Zoning, is retiring after 16 years with the city, including 11 years in his current role.

City Manager James Parajon today announced the retirement, which marks the end of Moritz’s 40-year career in planning.

“As the City’s Director of Planning & Zoning, Mr. Moritz has been a transformative leader, leading impactful projects throughout Alexandria, from the revitalization of our Waterfront to the ongoing redevelopment of Landmark Mall in the West End,” said City Manager James Parajon. “His contributions to the future of Alexandria are invaluable, and he will be missed.”

Moritz has led several big initiatives, including redevelopment projects in Potomac Yard and Oakville Triangle and the plan to redevelop the Potomac Generating Station, according to the City.

“During his tenure, Mr. Moritz advocated for an expansion of planning staff to ensure support of community and Citywide planning, bringing the department to its current level of 65.5 staff,” the City shares in a press release. “He brings respect and honor to the position and has encouraged a departmental culture of teamwork, continuing professional development, and equity. His most recent effort was to implement a one-stop process designed to further enhance development review procedures within the City to advance the vision of community plans”.

Moritz’s last day with Alexandria is set for June 30.
