Alexandria is set to gain from new transit projects planned for the I-395/95 corridor. The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission is reviewing 14 proposals aimed at easing traffic congestion, with several directly impacting the city.
The I-395/95 Commuter Choice program, which uses toll revenue for transportation improvements, includes potential upgrades to Alexandria’s DASH bus service in its draft project list.
NVTC staff will present these recommendations at the Commission’s May 1 meeting. Once fully implemented, the proposals are expected to support an additional 3,800 weekday transit trips along the corridor.
For Alexandria, the program proposes continued funding for two DASH routes: Line 35, connecting the city’s West End to the Pentagon, and Line 36, running between the Mark Center and Potomac Yard.
If approved, Line 35 would receive $7.4 million to maintain frequent, all-day service every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends. Line 36 would receive $4.4 million to continue running every 15 minutes all day, seven days a week.
The draft also includes funding for a new Metrobus route linking Alexandria’s Van Dorn Street Metro Station with downtown Washington, D.C.
NVTC and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, which jointly manage the Commuter Choice program, will vote on the final project list at their June meetings.
At the May 1 meeting, the Commission will also welcome Metro General Manager Randy Clarke and Board Chair Valerie Santos to discuss Metro’s recently approved budget for fiscal year 2026 and plans for future system upgrades.
The public meeting starts at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on NVTC’s YouTube channel. Residents can submit comments on agenda items until 3 p.m. on May 1 through NVTC’s website.
