Community invited to ACHS Friday for screening of Oscar-nominated ‘To Kill a Tiger’ and panel discussion on preventing gender violence

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and Oscar-nominated documentary director Nisha Pahuja are hosting a special screening and Q&A session at Alexandria City High School on Friday (May 2). This event is part of a nationwide campaign to end gender-based violence.

Starting at 7 p.m., the event will show a modified educational version of Pahuja’s film “To Kill a Tiger,” followed by a panel discussion. Dr. Atul Gawande, a surgeon, New York columnist, and author of “Being Mortal,” will moderate the discussion.

The screening is a key part of the #StandWithHer campaign, backed by NGO partners Equality Now, Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, and MenEngage Alliance.

“As filmmakers, we understand the power of story, especially documentary and its singular ability to unite people around an issue. The eradication of sexual violence and GBV needs the commitment of all of us. With “To Kill a Tiger,” we have a powerful story – the force of Ranjit’s love and the wisdom and courage of his daughter Kiran, are those rare elements around which movements can form, and the seeds of change planted”, said Pahuja.

The panel will tackle issues young people face today, including how media shapes identities and expectations, and ways to prevent gender-based violence.

Joining Pahuja on the panel are ACHS Social Worker Ana Bonilla-Galdamez, ACHS Educator Gabriel Elias, and José Campi Portaluppi, Equimundo’s Director of Communications and Advocacy.

The event is open to everyone. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Alexandria City High School – King Street Campus Auditorium.

The Ramesh and Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation and Equimundo’s “The Caring Masculinity Fund” are providing key funding for the #StandWithHer campaign. The latter was created as part of Melinda French Gates’ trust in Equimundo’s CEO Gary Barker.
