A fire erupted in a top-floor apartment in Alexandria on Friday night (April 25), triggering a two-alarm response from emergency services.
Alexandria Fire Department’s Engine and Truck 208 were first on the scene at the 5400 block of Sheffield Court. Firefighters encountered flames coming from a top-floor apartment and quickly worked to put out the fire, which had spread to the attic.
The incident led to temporary road closures in the area. On Friday night, the Alexandria Police Department shared on social media that Sanger Avenue, between N. Van Dorn and N. Beauregard streets, was closed due to the fire. It has reopened since then.
According to WJLA, a firefighter was injured, a cat died, and another cat was critically injured.
As of this morning, officials haven’t released any information about injuries or what caused the blaze.
“Our Fire Marshall’s are working to determine a cause of last night’s two alarm fire on the west end of the city,” Alexandria Firefighters, Inc. IAFF Local 2141 shared on Facebook.
In a press release provided to ALXnow on Saturday, the Red Cross says that it is assisting 10 households (a total of 25 residents) after the fire.
