Pinwheel Garden to be planted at Charles W. Hill Park for Child Abuse Prevention Month

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Alexandria Celebrates Women is planting a pinwheel garden in Del Ray on Friday, April 4.

Pat Miller, Chair of Alexandria Celebrates Women, says, “Pinwheels are the national symbol for child abuse prevention. In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. What they found is that people respond positively to pinwheels, which represent childlike whimsy and lightheartedness. All children need to grow up happy, healthy, and prepared to succeed in supportive families and communities.”

The event, which will take place at Charles W. Hill Park (300 East Oxford Avenue), begins at 9:30 a.m. and will include Mayor Alyia Gaskins reading a city proclamation. Child abuse survivors will share poems. Organizers share that several leading child abuse prevention groups are also expected to attend.

The community is welcome to join in and plant pinwheels to support preventing child abuse.

Alexandria Celebrates Women is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization with two main goals: raising funds for the Alexandria Domestic Violence Safehouse and recognizing the achievements of Alexandria’s women throughout history and today.
