Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt is pledging to maintain focus on academic excellence and student support despite potential changes with the Department of Education.
In response to ALXnow questions regarding what impact potential changes would have on public education in the City of Alexandria, Kay-Wyatt wrote, “Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is deeply concerned about yesterday’s executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Public education is fundamental to our democracy, and this action raises significant questions about the future of federal support, educational outcomes, and protections for students and educators nationwide”.
President Donald Trump’s executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, which was signed on Thursday, instructs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take steps to close the Department of Education and shift authority over education back to states and local communities.
“At this time, we will await further guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Education regarding the rollout as this executive order takes effect and the funding allocations have been finalized,” Kay-Wyatt says. “ACPS remains committed to advocating for a strong public education system that provides every student with the resources and opportunities they deserve”.
Kay-Wyatt emphasized that ACPS remains committed to advocating for strong public education and working closely with teachers, families, and community partners to support students.
“No matter what changes may come, our focus will continue to be on fostering academic excellence, social-emotional well-being and opportunity for all students,” Kay-Wyatt says. “We will work alongside our educators, families and community partners to provide the support, resources and innovative learning experiences that empower our students to thrive. Public education is the foundation of our society, and ACPS will remain unwavering in our dedication to its strength, resilience and ability to shape a brighter future for generations to come”.
Trump’s decision fulfills a campaign promise and aligns with long-standing Republican goals to shut down the Education Department, though this would likely require action from Congress.
