A new community health survey reveals that Alexandria residents consider mental health and substance use the most pressing health issues in the city. The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) conducted the survey in fall 2024, gathering insights from over 2,000 residents about the city’s health challenges, strengths, and areas for improvement.
During a webinar presenting the survey results, AHD officials reported, “Mental health; alcohol, drug, and opiate use; and obesity, physical activity, and nutrition are ranked as Alexandria’s biggest health issues.”
This survey is part of the ongoing Community Health Assessment, which aims to provide a comprehensive review of Alexandria’s health status by June 2025.
Residents identified diversity, community involvement opportunities, and educational resources as Alexandria’s main strengths.
When asked about factors that would most improve the city’s health, respondents prioritized:
– Safe and affordable housing
– Access to mental health and substance use services
– Support for families and youth
The survey results showed some variations in health concerns across different demographics. Older adults and those with higher education levels were more likely to cite chronic health conditions as a top issue, while lower-income individuals highlighted dental health as a primary concern.
AHD plans to use these survey findings, along with additional data analysis, to develop the next five-year Community Health Improvement Plan.
Residents still have opportunities to contribute to the assessment process. The health department will soon announce details for a community photo album project focused on health-related images.
A Community Walk and Talk event is scheduled for April 26 at 2 p.m. in the Landmark/Van Dorn area, giving residents a chance to engage directly with health officials. Find more details and RSVP online.
For those looking for more information or wanting to get involved, AHD staff will be available at the Office of Housing’s Housing Master Plan Update meeting on March 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Patrick Henry K-8 School. Learn more in the RSVP form.
