The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for Alexandria and nearby areas and warned of possible severe thunderstorms today (Wednesday, March 5).
The Wind Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. and covers Alexandria and parts of central, northern, and southern Maryland, as well as central and northern Virginia. Expect south winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph.
The NWS cautions that strong winds may blow around loose objects, potentially bringing down tree limbs and causing some power outages.

There’s also a risk of isolated severe thunderstorms this afternoon, which could bring damaging wind gusts and hail. The NWS notes that a tornado or two can’t be ruled out.
1114 AM EST Wed Mar 5 2025 This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and I-95 corridor through central Maryland, northern Virginia, and District of Columbia. .DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight Isolated severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail are possible this afternoon. A tornado or two cannot be ruled out as well. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 6 PM for areas around Fredericksburg VA into southern MD where the threat is currently highest. Gale Warnings are in effect for all of the waters through 11 PM tonight. Wind Advisories are in effect until 4 PM for much of the area between Fredericksburg and Baltimore. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday Gale Watches are in effect for all of the waters on Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.
