The Alexandria Times reported that the City of Alexandria has formed an interdepartmental group to deal with a range of problems at the Mason at Van Dorn apartment after a bombshell report by the Times about dreadful living conditions.

The Alexandria Times’ Alexandria Journalism Project reported earlier this month that residents in the apartment complexes suffered with a range of problems, from assaults and harassment by children in the complex to a variety of health hazards including overflowing trash and building disrepair.

The new group was established by Mayor Alyia Gaskins and City Manager Jim Parajon and includes the city’s Office of Housing, the Alexandria Police Department, the Code Enforcement Department and others.

The group is focused on understanding the problems at the housing complex and finding solutions. Tenants and Workers United lead organizer Ingris Moran expressed some skepticism to the Times about the working group’s effectiveness, noting that the city likes to create “ad-hoc task forces, listening sessions and focus groups” but sometimes fails to follow up with meaningful action to hold the landlords accountable.
