While thousands of mailed absentee ballots remain uncounted, Alexandria Democrats declared victory on election night.
Mayor-elect Alyia Gaskins said that when the provisional and mail-in absentee votes are tallied that the city’s Democratic candidates will make up the seven-person City Council.
“When the votes are tallied, you are going to see a council that includes Canek Aguirre, John Taylor Chapman, Sarah Bagley, Jacinta Greene and Abdel Elnoubi,” Gaskins told Alexandria Democrats at Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray.
Gaskins continued, “You are going to see any council that is going to deliver for you on housing, on transportation, on climate change, on gun violence, on issues that matter most to this community.
Council Member John Taylor Chapman declared victory in his fifth election, as did Canek Aguirre in his third electoral victory. City Council members Sarah Bagley and Kirk McPike declared themselves winners in their second elections. School Board Member Abdel Elnoubi and School Board Member Jacinta Greene also declared victory.
The top vote-getter, who is traditionally chosen as the next vice mayor by Council, was not determined on Tuesday night.
Independent candidate Roy Byrd received 16,195 in-person votes and conceded the election to the Democrats.
“We knew it was an uphill battle the whole way,” Byrd said. “We gave it our best shot and we hope that we were able to change the landscape a little bit.”
The in-person results of the election are below.
