Drivers headed to Shirlington will have to take a detour through Alexandria next week, offering Arlingtonians a glimpse at life once Alexandria finally annexes Shirlington.

The northbound ramp off I-395 to Shirlington Circle will be closed overnight Monday night (Sept. 16) and Tuesday night (Sept. 17) into the following mornings next week. The closure will force drivers onto Martha Custis Drive in the Parkfairfax neighborhood.

The closure is related to the ongoing rehabilitation of the Shirlington Circle south rotary bridge over I-395.

According to a release from the Virginia Department of Transportation:

Weather permitting, the northbound I-395 ramp to Shirlington Circle (Exit 6 ramp to Shirlington) will be closed Monday night, Sept. 16 and Tuesday night, Sept. 17 for paving, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The ramp will be closed as follows:

9:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17
9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18

Traffic will be detoured via the northbound I-395 ramp to North Quaker Lane, North Quaker Lane, Preston Lane, Martha Custis Drive and Gunston Road back to Shirlington Circle.

The ramp paving is part of the project to rehabilitate the Shirlington Circle south rotary bridge over I-395. The project, which will improve safety for drivers and extend the overall life of the bridge, is scheduled for completion in mid-2025.
