Alexandria takes another look at trying to fix neglected Duke Street park

A few years after looking for grants to revitalize John Ewald Park (4452 Duke Street), Alexandria is starting to put together plans to fix the somewhat neglected park.

The park still sees active use for its open field and basketball court, but few would argue the park is on par with other outdoor recreation areas around the city. In a release, the city said it’s seeking community feedback on recommendations to improve Ewald Park.

The 3.88-acre park currently features a lighted basketball court, playground, parking lot and open grass area.

An online survey will run through Sept. 23 to provide feedback on recommendations. Planning will start on a park concept design sometime this fall, the release said.

“The community comments received will help to prioritize the park improvements and will inform the work to create the park concept design, which will begin this fall,” the release said. “The results of the community survey will be posted on the project webpage. Additional community meetings and engagement on the park concept design will be scheduled from December to March 2025 and will conclude with a Park and Recreation Commission Public Hearing.”
