President Joe Biden has been facing widespread calls within the Democratic Party to step down and let another candidate, most likely Vice President Kamala Harris, lead the charge against Republican candidate Donald Trump this fall.

Within the group of Democrats representing Alexandria, however, there’s been some turmoil. Earlier this week Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), an Old Town resident, was organizing “a group of Democratic senators to ask President Biden to exit the presidential race.”

That meeting was ultimately cancelled and Warner later softened his stance somewhat. On Twitter, Warner made a more supportive but still skeptical statement that “as these conversations continue, I believe it is incumbent upon the President to more aggressively make his case to the American people, and to hear directly from a broader group of voices about how to best prevent Trump’s lawlessness from returning to the White House.”

Other local Democrats, on the other hand, circled the wagons around the President. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va) said he’s still backing Biden and said he doesn’t believe one bad debate performance should be held against the President. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) was earlier quoted saying Harris is likely in a better position to win in November, but Deputy Chief of Staff Aaron Fritschner said on Twitter that was a misquote and Beyer’s office released a public statement supporting Biden:

I support President Biden. I support the Biden-Harris ticket, and look forward to helping defeat Donald Trump in November. I was proud to host an event this week in Northern Virginia with the President, and will continue doing all I can to support the Biden-Harris campaign in Virginia and across the country.
