Police are investigating an attempted robbery at the Tobacco King (3104 Duke Street) last night (Monday) after an employee stared down a man with a gun and then chased him out of the store.

Surveillance video obtained by ALXnow showed a man entering the store around 9:35 p.m., inquiring about various brands, and then demanding that the cashier hand over the money. In the video, the cashier said he didn’t have cash and the robber threatened him with a gun.

“Kill me,” the employee said to the robber. “This gun; put it here and kill me. You’ll get nothing.”

Even as the robber came around the counter and fired two shots, the surveillance footage showed the employee continued to berate him, grabbing pepper spray — according to the police scanner — and attacking the armed robber.

According to APD Communications Director Tracy Walker:

Last night at approximately 10:48 p.m., Alexandria Police Officers responded to 3104 Duke Street, to the Tobacco King, for the report of an attempted robbery. The suspect, a male, entered the store with a firearm and fired two shots. No injuries occurred as a result of this incident. The suspect fled on foot. Detectives are investigating this incident and reviewing surveillance video. Anyone with information about this attempted robbery is asked to call the APD Criminal Investigations Division and speak to Detective Marable at 703-746-6883.
