The City of Alexandria is hosting an open house tonight for a long-awaited trail repair project.

A double whammy of historic floods in 2018 and 2019 wreaked havoc on the Holmes Run Trail — a beautiful forested trail running through woods and along the Holmes Run stream through the heart of Alexandria.

The project tackles four sites that saw extensive damage. One of those, the Holmes Run Trail Bridge at 4600 Duke Street, is complete, but the project website said two of the other sites are in the construction phase and the Holmes Run Trail at Dora Kelly Park is still in the design phase.

The project website said construction is scheduled to start on the Holmes Run Trail Bridge at the Morgan Street cul-de-sac and at North Ripley Street this summer.

The repair project has faced a series of design and procurement problems that have caused repeated delays. The project is currently slated to be fully completed by winter 2026 — a full eight years after the initial flooding damage.

The open house on the project is scheduled for 6:30-7:30 p.m. tonight at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Avenue).
