What qualities should the next chief of the Alexandria Police Department possess? The City of Alexandria is in the midst of its national search process and wants to know.

The police department has been led by interim Chief Raul Pedroso since February, when former Chief Don Hayes retired. Pedroso has made it no secret that he wants the job, and told ALXnow in an interview that he’s worked more than 30 years to reach this moment.

The City is working with the International Association of Chiefs of Police in its national search, which is beginning with a public feedback form that will be open until May 31.

The feedback form takes five minutes to complete, and asks whether you live and work in Alexandria, your age, zip code, and the top qualities you think that a police chief should possess.

Those qualities include:

  • An ability to make decisions
  • Community-focused
  • Commitment to law and order
  • Conflict resolution/De-escalation skills
  • Cultural competency
  • Good communication skills
  • Education and training credentials
  • Ethical and trustworthy
  • Promotes transparency
  • Record of accountability
  • Record of reducing crime
  • Respectful and non-judgmental
  • Service-oriented

The feedback form can be found in the following languages:
