Mayor Justin Wilson isn’t the only one leaving city government: after 25 years working for the city, Senior Community Liaison Elaine Scott is retiring.

Scott has run the City Academy — a nine-week program that teaches anyone interested in city government the ins and outs of city departments and operations — since 2009.

At the graduation of the latest class from the City Academy at a City Council meeting earlier this week, city leaders also celebrated Scott’s contribution to the city. Ebony Fleming, the city’s director of communications and public information, said that Scott’s impact will be felt on the city for generations.

“It’s been my pleasure; it’s been my honor,” said Scott. “I’ve learned so much, and I’m continuing to learn so much. I appreciate the grace and the patience and the teaching moments that everyone has shared with me throughout this whole process.”

When asked who had been through the City Academy, several members of the audience and every elected official stood.

“You have created a legacy of folks who are involved in our community and who understand how to interact with their government and how to make change in this community,” Wilson said. “That is an incredible legacy and one that will last for generations.”
