The city is set to convert one lane of East Abingdon Drive into a two-way bike lane, Patch reported.

The plan is to convert the right lane of the street, which runs parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, into a two-way lane that connects up to the Mount Vernon Trail.

The Mount Vernon Trail branches just north of Old Town, with one part continuing along the waterfront and the other leading onto E. Abingdon Drive. The section on East Abingdon Drive, however, requires cyclists to either ride in the street or on a narrow sidewalk.

Patch reported that the Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board approved the measure at their Monday meeting.

The bike lane is scheduled to be implemented sometime before spring 2024.
