Comcast powering the future of Alexandria with the Xfinity 10G Network

Comcast is proud to have served the Alexandria community for more than 20 years. We invest heavily in our technology, fiber infrastructure and local workforce to drive continuous innovation, reliability and deliver an excellent customer experience for residents and businesses throughout the region.

As the need for fast and powerful Internet continues to grow, we’re even more excited about what our Xfinity 10G Network means for residents and businesses in Alexandria now and into the future.

Powering Homes and Businesses in Alexandria

Our Xfinity 10G Network is a fiber-rich, next-generation broadband network that is already in place throughout Alexandria and delivers a powerful connection to our customers. Every day we have technicians, engineers and construction workers deployed across Northern Virginia to monitor, update and digitize our network, making it smarter, faster, more reliable, and more secure.

Unlike many of our competitors, we do not have to dig up streets and neighborhoods to lay costly new fiber plant. We are continuously making updates to our Xfinity 10G Network to deliver multigigabit speeds to tens of millions of Americans over the connections they already have in their homes.

However, the benefits of our network go beyond faster speeds. Our comprehensive connectivity experience combines a powerful network built to deliver Internet reliably and securely, with cutting-edge hardware and software.

Reliability

The next-generation Xfinity gateways deliver the most advanced WiFi technology — carrying three times more bandwidth to power streaming, gaming, videoconferencing, and more, simultaneously. Xfinity gateways provide a reliable connection throughout the home, and powerful WiFi Boost Pods extend coverage to hard-to-reach areas when needed.

Security

xFi Advanced Security — included for customers who rent an Xfinity gateway — delivers a smarter, more personalized security solution to keep your home network safe from cyber threats. From computers and mobile phones to home security cameras and smart thermostats, xFi Advanced Security protects connected devices from malware and other threats at the gateway before they reach household devices. Xfinity has blocked billions of cyber threats since the service was introduced a few years ago.

Benefits for Local Businesses

For local businesses, Comcast Business offers a suite of solutions — from Comcast Business VoiceEdge®, a hosted voice and unified communications solution, to Comcast Business SecurityEdge™, which helps businesses protect all connected devices on their network. Powered by its multi-gig speed broadband network, and backed by around-the-clock customer support, Comcast Business provides services to small and mid-size businesses in Alexandria and beyond, and is one of the leading service providers to the enterprise market.

Mobile

We have options for the mobile needs of both residents and businesses. Xfinity Mobile offers the most affordable 5G unlimited data plan, better pricing than offered by the “big three” providers. And Comcast Business Mobile — which is available to Comcast Business Internet customers — helps businesses with flexible data options, nationwide 5G coverage, and savings for up to 20 lines.

Investing in the Community

We are passionate about the community, because we live and work in Alexandria — from technicians visiting local homes and businesses, to experts ready to answer questions at our new Xfinity store at the Shoppes of Foxchase.

We are deeply committed to advancing digital equity in Alexandria and beyond, including launching 14 Lift Zones across Virginia that provide free, high-speed WiFi service to local community centers such as the Dunbar Alexandria-Olympic Boys & Girls Club.

Our team hosts dozens of community events each year to help Alexandria families sign up for free and low-cost Internet options — including the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible low-income households with a credit of up to $30 per month ($75 per month on Tribal lands) toward their Internet and/or mobile service. Thanks to ACP, eligible Comcast customers can get home Internet through Comcast’s Internet Essentials or Internet Essentials Plus at no cost once the federal credit is applied.

We have connected more than 26,000 Alexandrians to the Internet since 2011 through our Internet Essentials program. Internet Essentials customers can also add a line of unlimited 5G cellular data ($45) through Xfinity Mobile for as little as $24.95/month after the ACP benefit is applied.

The Future is Now

The Xfinity 10G Network seamlessly and simultaneously allows customers to enjoy video/live sports streaming, 4K gaming, videoconferencing, and all the other known — and yet to be invented — applications that will only continue to evolve, requiring the most robust network experience that only Comcast can offer.

We look forward to continuing to connect Alexandrians to what they love through the best connectivity and entertainment experience.

If you had a chance to enhance a child’s future with a time commitment of less than 2 hours a week, how would you respond? You have that opportunity right now to join over 200 Alexandrians as a reading tutor volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC).

ATC tutors work with one child in kindergarten, first, or second grade in Alexandria public schools who need extra help with reading. Tutors meet with their Book Buddy 1-2 times each week for 30 minutes October-May at school, during school hours. Many struggling readers only receive one-on-one instruction through this program, and it makes all the difference. Last year, ATC served 195 children, of whom 82% ended the year reading on grade level and 96% made substantial reading gains. But the need is great, and we are still seeing learning lags from the pandemic.

This year, ATC plans to significantly increase the size of the program to reach over 250 students and to serve every elementary school in Alexandria. This is very exciting news, but we will only succeed if we can recruit more tutors. ATC trains you, matches you with a child, and provides ongoing lesson materials and support.
