Alexandria Police are looking for a man who bought a luxury car with a fake driver’s license at Lindsay Lexus of Alexandria.

On August 29, the suspect walked into the dealership and picked out a 2021 Lexus LS400 and provided the salesperson with an Oklahoma driver’s license, according to police. The customer also allegedly told the salesperson that he’d recently relocated from Oklahoma to Richmond.

“The customer provided insurance document(ation) issued by AAA Insurance listing his current residence in Richmond,” police said in a search warrant. “The dealership completed a credit history check using identification for (the victim) and approved the customer for financing to complete the purchase.”

Police added, “The customer purchased the vehicle and drove the vehicle off the dealership’s parking lot.”

The next day, August 30, an Oklahoma man called the dealership asking about a credit check that was made the day before in his name. The man said he didn’t buy a car at Lindsay Lexus of Alexandria and sent along a photo of his driver’s license. The photos didn’t match, as the victim is an older white male and the suspect is a Black male.

The vehicle was later recovered in Henrico, Virginia, and returned to the dealership.

The suspect has not been arrested.

The Old Town Festival of Speed & Style, a celebration of eccentric mid-20th century vehicles, is scheduled to make a comeback this September.

The event started in 2019 and was a success, bringing thousands of visitors from the region to Old Town. The event, sponsored by Burke & Herbert Bank, was scheduled to make a comeback in 2020 but… you know. After several delays, the second annual Old Town Festival of Speed & Style is scheduled for Sept. 5 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

According to a press release for the event, it is slated to include over 100 rare and unusual cars and vintage motorcycles from around the world. The event is free and will span three blocks on lower King Street and around Market Square. There will also be a fashion demonstration from noon to 1 p.m. in which local boutiques and retail will showcase styles with themed cars.

The night before the festival, a “High-Octane Ball” will be held from 7:30-9:30. The celebration is a ticketed event, with proceeds going to benefit local non-profit ALIVE! and the USO.

Alexandria Police are investigating a hit and run involving an AVIS rental car at the intersection of S. Henry and Franklin Streets in Old Town.

The May 4 incident occurred at around 6:20 a.m., and left two motorists injured. The rental car, a Toyota Camry, was recorded running through a red, and then hit a 1999 Honda Civic traveling east on Franklin. The Civic was consequently then pushed into the path of another car.

One of the drivers was transported to the hospital with a serious hip injury and possible internal bleeding, and the other driver was treated for undisclosed minor injuries.

“When the vehicles came to final rest, the (suspect) fled the scene prior to police or EMS arrival and did not return to the scene,” police said in a search warrant affidavit.

The car was rented out to a man by the name of Daniel Lee Nelson, however the name “did not return any result in law enforcement, nor DMV databases,” police said.

The Camry has since been impounded.
