Alexandria’s D-Day commemoration moves to new location during City Hall construction

Alexandria’s annual D-Day Commemoration won’t be skipped this year even as City Hall and Market Square construction moved it out of its normal location.

The 16th Annual D-Day Commemoration will take place from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at Carlyle Square (300 John Carlyle Street). Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley, Council Member John Taylor Chapman, Council Member Jacinta Greene and representatives from the French and British embassies, the U.S. military and veterans organizations are expected to provide remarks.

Alexandria needs to fill dozens of board, committee and commission vacancies

Civic-minded Alexandria residents who want to help lead their city have an opportunity to serve on a board or commission, and the deadline to apply is approaching soon.

Applicants must be city residents, and otherwise a special waiver will need to be approved by City Council. Committee assignments can last between two and five years, and residents can only apply for one committee at a time. The online application deadline is 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, and the following openings are available:

‘Bienvenue Beaujolais’ wine tasting returns next week with Sister City Committee

Alexandria will celebrate its international sisterhood with Caen, France, next week during a “Bienvenue Beaujolais” wine tasting fundraiser.

Guests at the cultural, culinary evening can expect guided wine tastings and French cuisine to commemorate Beaujolais Nouveau Day, an annual celebration of the year’s first release of the red wine.

Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee announces Beaujolais tasting in Old Town

How do you like your Beaujolais?

The Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee just announced that it will host a food and wine tasting that will “delight your taste buds and transport you to the heart of France,” according to the city. The event is being held the week before Thanksgiving at Lloyd House (220 N. Washington Street) on Nov. 20 (Thursday), from 7 to 9 p.m.

Alexandria to commemorate 81st anniversary of D-Day with special events

The City of Alexandria is planning two special events this June to mark 81 years since D-Day.

On June 1, 2025, the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee will host its 15th Annual D-Day Commemoration at Market Square. This free event promises World War II reenactors, historical exhibits, and live jazz. The U.S. Army Fife and Drum Corps will perform, and a French market and activities for kids will also be available. Local officials and special guests will take part in a commemorative ceremony.
