On This Day in Alexandria History — “On October 8, 1943 U.S. Marine Corps Major General Charles Dodson Barrett, who had grown up in Alexandria, died in World War II in the South Pacific. Barrett was the first Commanding General of the 3d Marine Division. A new elementary school in Parkfairfax was name in Barrett’s honor not long after his death.” [Historic Alexandria]

Metro Adjusts Yellow and Blue Line Service Today — “From 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., trains will single track on the Yellow and Blue lines between Pentagon City and National Airport. All Yellow Line trains will run between Huntington and Greenbelt only.” [Metro/Bluesky]

More Erroneous Citations Reported After Speed Camera Error  — “At the time, Alexandria police told the I-Team they had improperly issued 115 tickets … That’s when police provided new numbers revealing the problem was much larger than originally disclosed. It wasn’t 115 tickets. Alexandria police now said the camera improperly issued 834 tickets totaling more than $83,000.” [WJLA]

Second Half Real Estate Tax Bills Mailed — “Second half Real Estate tax and fee payments are due on Monday, November 16. All Real Estate taxes and fees not paid or postmarked by November 16 will be charged a late payment penalty and interest. The calendar year 2026 Real Estate tax rate is $1.135 per $100 of assessed value.” [City of Alexandria]

Mixed Results for School Performance and Support Framework at ACPS — “Scores rose at 16 of 17 Alexandria City Public Schools under Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework for the 2025-26 school year, but three schools are rated as meeting or exceeding the state’s expectations, according to data the state released Wednesday.” [Alexandria Brief]

Arlington Restaurant Owner Sounds Alarm on Small Business Struggles — “Sarah White, the owner of Westover Taco, recently wrote on Facebook that she has yet to recover from a summer slump and even hit a record low in sales amid pressures from inflation and rising prices. Pointing to the recent closure of Tupelo Honey in the Rosslyn area and, in Falls Church, the closure of Preservation Biscuit Company and sale of Harvey’s, White said that many local restaurants are facing similar issues.” [ARLnow]

Lt. Governor Opposes Dominion Energy Merger After Statewide Tour — “The lieutenant governor recently completed a five-city tour across the Dominion coverage area to hear firsthand Virginians’ concerns over the merger. The clearest feedback, [Lt. Gov. Ghazala] Hashmi said, was that citizens are worried the deal could make their utility bills skyrocket, citing increased energy costs in recent years.” [Virginia Mercury]

DC Water Finds No River Concerns After January Sewage Spill — “Following the collapse of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line, DC Water conducted daily testing for more than six months at as many as 10 locations upstream and downstream of the overflow. Samples were tested for E. coli, with earlier results showing bacteria levels had returned to the range normally found in the river and health advisories subsequently lifted.” [MoCo Show]

New Policy for Notifying DCA of President’s Helicopter Takeoffs — “Under the new policy, Marine One still has to give that three-minute warning, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment. But now a separate entity, the National Capital Region Coordination Center, also is supposed to notify the airport’s air traffic control tower before the president’s helicopter takes off. The coordination center oversees airspace security in the D.C. area.” [The Washington Post]

Book Buddy Tutors Needed for Alexandria Program — “Tutor Kids as a Book Buddy – 37 children still need a tutor. Work one-on-one with K-2nd graders with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium during the school day. Training is provided.” [Volunteer Alexandria]

Tropical Storm Impacts Possible in Region This Weekend — “Tropical Storm Isaias formed in the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday morning and is likely to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall along the Gulf Coast Friday night … We are likely to see periods of rain in the DC area starting at some point Saturday night or Sunday morning the way it looks now, then tapering Sunday night or Monday morning. It’s a bit early to have much confidence in rainfall totals, but there is potential for an inch or more in some locations.” [Capital Weather]

It’s Thursday — Sunny with a high near 77 and northwest winds of 6 to 15 mph, gusting up to 20 mph. Thursday night will be clear, with a low around 53 and light northwest winds of 3 to 6 mph. [NWS]
