Drawbridge opening for boat passage planned tonight on Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Passage of a boat will prompt a drawbridge opening at the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge tonight (Oct. 1). The drawbridge will open around 11 p.m. to allow the boat Sweet Pea to pass underneath, the bridge management reported.

According to the city, the opening is expected to last for 15 to 20 minutes. Drivers should plan for travel delays when the drawbridge is open.

The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge over the Potomac River connects Virginia and Prince George’s County, Md. via the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495). The bridge management occasionally opens the bridge for taller vessels to pass underneath, as well as for maintenance work.

The reconstructed drawbridge’s opening in 2006 reduced openings from roughly 260 times per year to about 60 every year.
