ACPS Pushes Back School Registration Dates

Due to Gov. Ralph Northam’s stay at home order, school registration dates in Alexandria are being pushed back.

The most immediate impact is registration for kindergarten. The start date for 2020-2021 kindergarten registration is now May 15, a month later than originally planned.

“Kindergarten registration is divided into two separate parts,” ACPS explained in a newsletter. “Step 1 is the completion of the forms. Step 2 is the in-person verification of required documents. Both need to be completed for a child to be registered for the start of the next school year.”

Registration requires in-person presentation of forms, which will be available at food distribution locations or can be printed off from the ACPS website.

A tentative date of June 15 is also set for the start of in-person verification of required documents, though ACPS noted this is conditional on Northam lifting the stay-at-home order.

Students can also register for the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) program by calling 703-619-8026 or emailing vpiearlychildhood@acps.k12.va.us, but registration will not be completed until the stay-at-home order has been lifted.

The schools also will not be enrolling students coming into the school system from outside Alexandria until June 15 but said those students should still feel welcome to the local school community.

“Students wishing to register with ACPS will be offered a learning packet with grade-appropriate activities and will continue to be welcomed into the school community between now and June 15, 2020,” ACPS said.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
