The City of Alexandria recently launched an app that should make life a little easier for Alexandrians with disabilities using the city’s paratransit service.

The new app is a Department of Transportation program made in partnership with New York-based company Via. The app streamlines the vehicle dispatch process and aims to shorten wait times for rides. Benefits from the new app include:

  • Reserve, track, and cancel rides through the app
  • Receive automated ride notification reminders the night before a reservation, when the vehicle is approaching, and when the vehicle has arrived
  • Pay for fares by credit card
  • Receive a 30-minute pickup window to allow service to run more efficiently and serve more riders

The app also extends the service into some of the surrounding D.C. area, expanding travel options for Alexandria residents with disabilities.

the fees remain unchanged with the new app. Trips are free within the city of Alexandria. They’re $4 if traveling less than five miles outside of the city of $6 if traveling more than five miles outside of the city.

“The City is excited to make these important changes to our paratransit program, and offer DOT users fast, easy-to-use, technology-based options for transportation scheduling,” Mayor Justin Wilson said in the release. “All transportation system users deserve safe, efficient, equitable, and convenient travel options.”

Those that don’t wish to use the app can still book a ride by calling 703 836 5222.

The app, along with additional information about the program, is available at the city’s website.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
