A fourth “No Kings” protest against the Trump administration is coming to Alexandria.
Indivisible Do Something Alexandria is hosting the event to highlight a nationwide day of early voting before the Nov. 3 midterm elections outside the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke Street) on Saturday, Oct. 17. Protesters will line Duke Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event listing says that this will be more than a protest:
For more than a year, millions of people have come together to reject the idea that power belongs to kings, billionaires, or politicians who believe they are above the people and the law.
Now, we are taking the next step, turning people power into voter power. Unlike previous No Kings actions, No Kings: Vote Early, is not purely a protest. Instead, on October 17th, it’s a day of nonpartisan voter participation: we are bringing our community together to make a plan to vote early and ensuring every eligible voter understands their options for how to vote and has the opportunity to make their voice heard.
The next day, on Sunday, Oct. 18, the group will host a “party at the polls” from 1-4 p.m. to celebrate the opening of weekend early voting. The event will also be held outside the library.
“The non-partisan October 17th No Kings 4 day of action and October 18th Party at the Polls are a culminating step in this growing national movement for democracy,” Indivisible Do Something Alexandria said in a release.
The events come in the midst of midterm elections to decide party control of Congress. In Alexandria, elections include the seats of Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Rep. Don Beyer (D-8). Three constitutional amendments on reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and voting rights for former felons are also on the ballot.
