Multiple drawbridge openings set for next two days on Woodrow Wilson Bridge

Late-night drivers on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) will encounter some delays over the next two nights on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

The drawbridge will open at 11 p.m. tonight (Oct. 7) to let the Sweet Pea pass through, according to the City of Alexandria. The opening is expected to take 15 to 20 minutes. The bridge had last opened for the Sweet Pea to pass on Oct. 1.

Next, multiple openings for maintenance will occur starting at 10 p.m. tomorrow (Oct. 8). Intermittent traffic stoppages could occur through 5 a.m. Oct. 9.

The city advises residents to plan for delays during the drawbridge openings.

Because the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge between Virginia and Maryland features a drawbridge, it occasionally opens to allow taller vessels to pass, as well as for maintenance work. When a higher reconstructed bridge reopened in 2006, drawbridge openings were reduced from roughly 260 times per year to about 60 every year.
