On This Day in Alexandria History — “On September 29, 1896, a severe storm caused extensive damage in and around Alexandria. High winds from a hurricane, the fourth of the Atlantic season, impacted the downtown area as well as Del Ray and outlying areas. Two people were killed in Alexandria and dozens of buildings, including the Third Baptist Church, the Virginia Glassworks, Smoot’s planing mill, and Pioneers Mills, were heavily damaged. Telegraph service, the gas works, trains and the electric railway were also impacted by the storm and debris.” [Historic Alexandria]

Trial Scheduled for Alexandria Woman’s Fatal Stabbing — “Musa Kargbo, 43, is now scheduled to stand trial on Jan. 11 in Fairfax County Circuit Court. The Prince George’s County resident is accused of killing Isha Koroma, 26, of Alexandria, outside of the Annandale home where she worked taking care of a child, on Nov. 7, 2025.” [FFXnow]

Duke of Edinburgh Headed to Mount Vernon This Week — “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 1, as part of a visit to the United States marking America’s 250th anniversary. Seminary West Safety Improvements to Be Proposed — “In 2025, the City completed an initial planning study of safety improvements on Seminary Road between North Beauregard Street and George Mason Drive, which was supported by a Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Regional Roadway Safety grant. Following the initial study, the City has advanced planning, conceptual design, and analysis of multiple design concepts for the corridor and will be seeking additional community feedback in October. New Buffet Opens in Alexandria West — “Umi opened on Sept. 12 in the old TGI Fridays spot on the corner of King Street and Beauregard Street. That restaurant closed in October 2024. Little Theatre of Alexandria’s One-Act Playwriting Winners Named — “Three new plays—one involving Arctic beavers, another a book warning of global economic trouble, and a third a snowbound hunt for a former English soccer star—have won The Little Theatre of Alexandria’s 2026 One-Act Playwriting Competition. LTA announced Monday that judges selected three winners from 200 submissions from playwrights around the world. The winning works will receive staged readings at the Wolfe Street theater on January 18, 2027, at 8 p.m.” [The Zebra]
Where Early Voting Stands in Virginia — “Virginians are voting early in big numbers. In fact, early voting in this year’s midterms is outpacing the previous midterm elections in 2022. The national average for diesel is $6.44 per gallon.
