ACPS to Dedicate Media Center to Teacher Tuesday — “Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) will host a special naming ceremony to officially dedicate the media center at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School as the ‘Jean B. Reid Media Center’ in honor of former ACPS educator Jean B. Investigation into Alexandria’s Flock Cameras — “The same technology had enkindled a furor across the nation, but without as much as a public hearing, few in Alexandria took notice of the nondescript, black lenses affixed to utility poles. And yet here the cameras were, 81 of them, at least – manufactured by the companies Flock Safety and Axon Enterprises – perched on roadways and side streets, monitoring church parking lots and private homes, cataloguing the cars arriving to school and leaving apartment buildings, some since 2023.” [Alexandria Times]

Status of Labor Unions in Virginia and Other States — “Virginia lawmakers approved a measure to repeal the state’s longstanding ban on public-sector collective bargaining. That would have expanded the possibility of union membership to half a million public employees in the commonwealth. But Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger vetoed that measure in May. The governor said she agreed with the goal of expanding collective bargaining rights. But she urged the legislature to adopt specific amendments, including delaying provisions of the bill until 2030 and shifting authority over how the system operates to a state board.” [Virginia Mercury]
Legal Fight Over Trump’s Mail-In Voting Order Continues — “The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to lift a block on the U.S. Postal Service plan for President Trump’s attempt to restrict mail-in voting for the midterm election. Hikes Expected for 2027 Affordable Care Act Plans in Virginia — “While the General Assembly approved a few measures earlier this year to mitigate costs, the average rate increase health insurance companies are asking for is 16.7%, putting the average premium at $676.11 per month before state assistance, according to the State Corporation Commission. The SCC said that “medical costs and changes in federal law” were the main reasons for the increase.” [VPM]
