An Alexandria man faces a felony theft charge after allegedly being found with a stolen bicycle that had a tracking device on it.
The victim reported to the Alexandria Police Department that a chain was cut and his Cannondale Quick CX bicycle was stolen on April 25 in the 4400 block of Taney Avenue in the city’s West End, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. The victim also told police that he had a tracking device on the bike, which is worth about $1,500, and that it was still located somewhere within the same block.
“Officers canvassed the area and located the reported stolen bicycle affixed to a bike rack attached to a vehicle” with Virginia license plates, according to the affidavit.
APD did a registration check on the vehicle and found that the suspect also lives in that same block on Taney Avenue. When they went to the apartment, officers saw “three-to-four laptop computers stacked on top of one another in a manner inconsistent with typical personal use,” and multiple bicycles parked in the balcony area, as well as “two high-end electric bicycles,” according to the affidavit.
APD also found security footage of a vehicle matching the suspect’s vehicle driving up to the Cannondale bicycle, and “a male matching the physical description of [the suspect] wearing a mask and a hoodie steals the bicycle,” according to the affidavit.
The suspect was released on bond and goes to court on Aug. 24.
