Resurfacing work on a section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria is beginning today (Thursday), the National Park Service says.
The latest repaving follows the first phase between Spout Run Parkway and Interstate 395 in Arlington. Crews will resurface the road and replace pedestrian crossing medians between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and First Street.
The first layer of asphalt will be removed and replaced with new asphalt overnight and on weekends. Work is expected to continue through June.
“This work will help preserve the parkway, improve driving conditions and extend the life of the roadway,” NPS says.
During the week of April 27, replacement of the pedestrian crossing medians will begin at Bashford Lane and Slaters Lane in Alexandria. Each pedestrian crossing will be closed for about a week during the work, and the nearby bike lane will be closed within the work zone. Resurfacing work will also affect pedestrian crossings between N. Washington Street and First Street. Pedestrians will follow detour routes through the work zone.
NPS says periodic ramp closures to and from the GW Parkway will also happen during construction. Commuters can check for updates on the NPS GW Parkway website and message boards along the parkway.
Crews will use part of the Columbia Island parking lot near the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove as a staging area during the project.
