Volunteers will gather this weekend to clean up Waterfront Park, a popular gathering spot for Old Town visitors along the Potomac River.
The Alexandria Beautification Commission and NOVA Cleanups are hosting the volunteer cleanup from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday (April 12). Volunteers will pick up litter and debris throughout the park, covering walking paths, green spaces and the waterfront.
Volunteers are still being accepted and will be provided with gloves, trash pickers and trash bags. Registration is available through NOVA Cleanups, which regularly hosts cleanups around the region.
“Waterfront Park is one of Alexandria’s most loved public spaces, and keeping it clean preserves its beauty, helps protect the environment, and ensures it remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone,” Camden Weber, a commissioner on the Alexandria Beautification Commission, told ALXnow. “I think efforts like this — particularly now, when things can feel so out of our control —that give us the ability to make a direct impact with our hands and do so as part of a community can be incredibly healing and hopeful.”
Following the cleanup, there will be an optional volunteer meet-up at Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden (1106 King Street).
