Barnes & Noble is planning a new bookstore in the Shoppes at Foxchase.
The national book retailer hopes to open in Walgreens’ former space at 4515 Duke Street toward “the end of this year,” a spokesperson told ALXnow. The plans come as the company seeks to open at least 60 stores across the country in 2026, including a new multilevel bookstore that opened last month in D.C.
“We are always on the lookout for new opportunities to expand and are thrilled to be opening in Alexandria,” the spokesperson said.
The company says it is experiencing “a period of tremendous growth” after more than 15 years of declining store numbers, according to a release. There are now more than 700 Barnes & Noble locations nationwide, compared to less than 600 in 2023.
Like other Barnes & Nobles, the Foxchase shop will carry “a curated selection of books, based on customer interest, with a complement of gifts, toys, games and puzzles” across approximately 13,000 square feet, the spokesperson said.
In Alexandria, the new bookstore is slated to join an existing Barnes & Noble location in Potomac Yard.
Elsewhere in Northern Virginia, the two-level Barnes & Noble in Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood is currently closed for downsizing to make way for a new ax-throwing venue and brewery on its former ground floor.
