Christmas tree collection in Alexandria starts today

It’s time to start taking those Christmas trees down.

Christmas tree collection in Alexandria starts today (Friday) and will last through Friday, Jan. 16. The city will pick up natural Christmas trees and wreaths at residents’ usual waste collection spots during their regularly scheduled collection.

Residents are asked to follow these steps when preparing trees for disposal.

  • Remove all ornaments, tinsel, lights, and stands.
  • Do not place in plastic bags.
  • Place the tree at your regular yard waste collection point by 6:00 a.m. on your trash collection day.

Getting rid of any natural wreaths or garlands? The city asks that these items are separated from any wires before disposal. If this is not possible, these may be discarded with regular trash.

Collected trees will be shredded and turned into mulch, which should be available for delivery or pickup this spring.

Artificial trees may also be discarded next to trash containers on collection day, but Alexandria encourages residents to consider donation if trees are in good shape. More tips to reduce holiday waste are available on the city’s website.
