Gaskins announces ‘Mayors’ Cup’ rugby rematch with Dundee, Scotland

It’s been 17 years since Alexandria’s sister city of Dundee, Scotland, creamed the city in the first-ever Mayors’ Cup rugby match.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins says it’s time for a rematch. On Dec. 6, Alexandria Select XV team tryouts were held at the George Washington Middle School athletic fields.

“Last Saturday, we held team tryouts as we gear up to bring back the Mayor’s Cup rugby match,” Gaskins said on social media. “I’m excited to share that, in partnership with our sister city of Dundee Scotland, we are going to bring back this tradition in May 2026.”

The public can get updates on the Alexandria team’s new Instagram page.

“In 2008 we introduced the sport of rugby to Alexandria,” according to Alexandria Mayors’ Cup 2026-2027. “The Mayor’s Cup was first competed for in Dundee, Scotland in 2008 and in Alexandria in May 2009. The Lord Provost of Dundees Select XV won hands down. We’re ready for a rematch. It’s long overdue.”
