Bill Butcher, founder of Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria, is worried about the new 25% tariffs that begin today on Canadian and Mexican goods.

“Our bottle caps are manufactured in Mexico,” Butcher explained to Hearst Television’s Washington D.C. Bureau. “Our pilsner malt, our base malt, comes from Canada. That’s the main ingredient in all of our beers, and so we’re going to have to increase our prices substantially.”

“People are willing to pay more for a better quality product, but there are limits to that,” said Butcher. “And at a certain point, people start looking for other options.”

The Trump administration claims these new taxes will push Canada and Mexico to tighten up on immigration and illegal drug flow. Trump had put off the tariffs in February but recently announced that Canada and Mexico couldn’t avoid these hefty taxes any longer and announced that they would begin today.

This move is part of a bigger trade plan that also includes new tariffs on Chinese imports, set to also start today.
