Poll: Which Alexandria market is most oversaturated? Coffee, Pizza or Banks?

Old Town is getting more banks, coffee shops and pizza places, and many of the comments say enough is enough.

TD Bank filed a special use permit to move into the former SunTrust branch at 515 King Street. Mudhouse Coffee Roasters also filed a permit this week to finally move into 1119 King Street.

The reaction to both in the comments was a collective groan. That’s not a comment on the quality of either location, but both feel like additions to oversaturated markets in Alexandria and Old Town in particular.

TD Bank will be sharing the ground floor with Tatte Bakery & Cafe — across the street from two different coffee shops (Starbucks and La Madeline).

Similar complaints have arisen regarding new pizza places (particularly in Del Ray). While a majority of respondents to an ALXnow poll in 2022 said there’s not enough good pizza in Alexandria, there’s been a wave of new pizza places since then.

“You can have too many pizza places and not enough good pizza at the same time,” one commentor said.
