More electric vehicle charging stations are coming to economically disadvantaged communities in Alexandria and its neighbors.
A new $4 million grant from the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, will pay for the installation of new electric vehicle charging stations in Virginia and Maryland.
A release said the focus is on providing charging stations in economically disadvantaged communities to close gaps in the existing charging network.
“Officials across our region are committed to ensuring all residents can access the environmental and economic benefits that electric vehicles offer,” said Virginia Burke, electric vehicle and air quality programs manager with the Maryland Department of Transportation and chair of the COG Regional Electric Vehicle Deployment (REVD) Working Group. “By keeping equity at the center of our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we can create thriving communities more resilient to a changing climate.”
