Alexandria City Public Schools incurred an unexpected $1.4 million extra in construction costs related to new solar panels at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School and the Minnie Howard Campus of Alexandria City High School, the Alexandria Times reported.

The cost came from a new Dominion Energy requirement that required ‘direct transfer trips’, an expensive dark fiber optic addition that allows the system to be automatically disconnected. The Washington Post previously reported this summer that the new requirement stalled other solar projects around Virginia, including solar panels at a Prince William County school.

ACPS told the Alexandria Times that the additional upgrades cost $105,000 for Douglas MacArthur and $1.3 million for Minnie Howard. Still, ACPS said the school district is still committed to installing solar panels at future projects.
