The school year starts on Monday, Aug. 19, and Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is still hoping to fill vacancies at Alexandria City High School (ACHS) before students return.
Executive Director of Human Resources Kamika Valmond said there are “a dozen” vacancies at the school.
“Our recruitment efforts have continued at ACPS, Alexandria City High School (ACHS) currently has just over a dozen vacancies with interviews ongoing and the expectation to fill some of these openings before we welcome back students on August 19, 2024,” Valmond said. “ACPS is actively recruiting highly qualified staff to contribute to our success for the 2024-25 school year. In addition to the vacancies at ACHS, ACPS is also focused on filling positions in other areas throughout the division including bus drivers, math, science and special education teachers, to ensure we are fully staffed.”
The ACPS website indicated there were 20 openings at Alexandria City High School, including teachers and support staff but not including the “casual” coaching positions in the athletics department.
Openings included teachers for auto tech, special education, and business. There were also several openings in ACHS’ International Academy.
While the school has a dozen full-time teacher vacancies, Valmond said that’s fewer than previous years.
“Alexandria City High School (ACHS) has approximately a dozen full-time teacher vacancies, which is fewer than in previous years,” Valmond said. “Interviews are ongoing and hire requests continue. The active hiring pools currently posted outweigh the number of open positions, until positions within the job pool have been filled.”
Valmond said ACPS is also offering recruitment bonuses for new staff hired between July 2 and Sept. 1 for bus drivers, math, science and special education teachers.
