Two men are being held without bond on multiple charges after allegedly fleeing police, crashing into a light pole and being chased on foot near Alexandria City High School.

The incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9. An Alexandria Police Department officer tried to pull over a 2004 maroon-colored Chevy Impala whose driver had a suspended license, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

“When officers initiated our blue lights to signal the driver to stop, the driver immediately accelerated through the parking lot of the Shell Gas Station at 3401 King Street toward the intersection of King Street and Braddock Road,” APD said in the search warrant affidavit.

The affidavit continued, “At that point, the vehicle ran directly into a light pole and knocked it down while simultaneously totaling his vehicle.”

The 26-year-old driver and his 29-year-old passenger then allegedly ran off toward the Arlington County line. One suspect was later arrested near the Safeway at 3526 King Street and the other suspect was arrested in the 4100 block of 36th Street in Arlington.

While looking for anything that the suspects could have discarded on-foot, investigators found a .45 caliber handgun in the backyard of a home in the 4100 block of 36th Street, as well as clear plastic baggies with suspected narcotics, according to the search warrant affidavit.

The driver was charged with possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I/II drugs, being a nonviolent felon in possession of a firearm, fleeing from law enforcement, failing to stop at the scene of an accident with more than $1,000 in damages, and driving without a license.

The passenger was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I/II drugs, fleeing from law enforcement, failing to stop at an accident with more than $1,000 in damages, and eluding police.

Both suspects make their first appearances in court on August 9.
