Over the last 15 years, yarn shop fibre space (1319 Prince Street) has become a pillar of Old Town’s retail community.

Beyond just its notable exterior mural and unique triangular building, the crafting shop has endured through the rise of online retail, a Metro shutdown, and Covid. This summer, the shop is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

“fibre space has grown into so much more than a retail shop in the last 15 years,” owner Danielle Romanetti said in a release. “It has become a third space for our community, a place for people to learn new skills and be inspired and connect with others. We would not have had the success that we have had without the incredible community of stitchers who have supported us over the last decade and a half and our growing team of knowledgeable and passionate staff.”

According to the release, Romanetti’s first business, Knit-a-Gogo, provided knitting instruction at DMV coffee shops in 2006. The customer base grew and students needed a quality source for materials, so Romanetti left a non-profit job to launch fibre space in 2009. The location changed a few times over the years but settled at 1319 Prince Street in 2017.

“In 2021, fibre space received the Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award and in 2016 Danielle was named to the 40 under 40 list of Chamber of Commerce Business,” the release said. “Vice President Kamala Harris visited fibre space in 2021 for her first off-sight visit while in the White House, meeting and highlighting Danielle to discuss the second Covid relief bill and the impact the bill had on small businesses.”

The release noted that the shop has a series of celebrations planned for this summer:

  • Custom Yarn and notions – Over the next few weeks and months, fibre space is launching a series of custom yarn and other accessories in partnership with its most popular and unique vendors. These items are one of a kind and celebrate the 15-year milestone.
  • Re-release of vintage designs of fibre space merch – These vintage designs include tote bags and t-shirts, which will be rolled out in late July through the end of the year. These include fan favorite designs of shirts and totes from over the last 15 years.
  • Two day sale of 15% (July 19-20)-  For two days only, fibre space is offering 15% off of all regular priced items.
  • Exclusive Gifts- Enjoy gifts with purchases and discounts of up to 50% off on select yarns and notions in fiber space’s second floor sale area.
  • Special Events- Focusing on shifting back to the heart of the pre-covid business, workshop and events will be hosted with community building at the forefront. These events will include movie nights and events hosted in tandem with other local businesses. Events will be visited by nationally and internationally known designers.
