Former President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to Alexandria National Cemetery for a Memorial Day weekend event on Saturday.
“Thanks to @BarackObama for surprising and joining incredible volunteers in Alexandria National Cemetery today as they work to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed to secure our freedoms,” tweeted Mayor Justin Wilson. “Mr. President, you are always welcome in Alexandria!”
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 609 was cleaning the military cemetery when they received a visit from the 44th president.
“One of the greatest honors of my life was the privilege of serving as commander-in-chief, and with pride also came sometimes heartbreak and loss,” Obama said at the cemetery, according to the Military Times. “And the sober recognition of the sacrifices that so many Americans and their families have made to preserve our freedom.
