Notes: New report says Potomac Yard arena could create crowding for over an hour at nearby Metro station

Good Wednesday morning, Alexandria!

☀️ Today’s weather: Expect sunshine and a high of 48 degrees during the day, accompanied by a gentle north wind blowing at 3 to 6 mph. The night will be mostly clear, with the temperature dropping to a low of around 31 degrees and calm winds.

A consultant report (page 19) about the new Potomac Yard arena found the nearby Metro station could see crowding of 60-90 minutes after events unless significant upgrades are made to the station, NBC4 reported.

A transportation plan presented last week said a widened bridge, new escalators, and additional fare gates would be added to the station. Those upgrades are estimated to cost between $35 million and $70 million.

Even with the new escalators and fare gates called for in the transportation plans for the site, NBC reported the station could still have heavy crowding for 30-45 minutes after events.

Despite prior concerns raised by Metro GM Randy Clarke, the Potomac Yard Metro station has been one of the central pillars of the arena development’s transportation plans — especially given that the arena will have deliberately low levels of parking to encourage the use of public transit.
