🚨 You need to know

On Friday, the Washington Post offered an extensive, up-close view of the $615 million tunneling project under Old Town.

The project is part of a state mandate for the city to clean up its outdated stormwater and sewage overflow. The new tunnel — carved out by a huge drill named “Hazel” — will instead redirect the overflow into a wastewater facility.

The Washington Post story shows what life is like for the drillers working beneath the city, with a small base-camp including water, electricity, WiFi, and a small kitchen, all with workers toiling 150 feet beneath Old Town.
