With Alexandria’s recorded COVID-19 cases at an all-time high, some changes have been made to the installation of the new City Council on Monday.
According to an email from the City of Alexandria, the location has been moved from Alexandria City High School to the Council Chamber in City Hall.
“The candidates elected by Alexandria voters in November to serve as Mayor and members of City Council will be formally installed at a public meeting on Monday, January 3, 2022, at 6 p.m,” the press release said. “The installation meeting has been moved to City Hall in Council Chamber to prevent further spread of COVID-19 while Alexandria is experiencing its highest number of new COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. Due to physical distancing requirements, there will be very limited in-person seating available in Council Chamber.”
COVID-19 cases spiked around Christmas with 376 new cases reported. The increase is due in part to the more infectious omicron variant and due to an increase in the number of people testing around the holidays.
Those hoping to watch the installation are encouraged to watch the meeting online. It will be streamed live on the city website, via Zoom and by broadcast on Comcast cable channel 70/1084. A video will also be posted the next day.

If you had a chance to enhance a child’s future with a time commitment of less than 2 hours a week, how would you respond? You have that opportunity right now to join over 200 Alexandrians as a reading tutor volunteer with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC).
ATC tutors work with one child in kindergarten, first, or second grade in Alexandria public schools who need extra help with reading. Tutors meet with their Book Buddy 1-2 times each week for 30 minutes October-May at school, during school hours. Many struggling readers only receive one-on-one instruction through this program, and it makes all the difference. Last year, ATC served 195 children, of whom 82% ended the year reading on grade level and 96% made substantial reading gains. But the need is great, and we are still seeing learning lags from the pandemic.
This year, ATC plans to significantly increase the size of the program to reach over 250 students and to serve every elementary school in Alexandria. This is very exciting news, but we will only succeed if we can recruit more tutors. ATC trains you, matches you with a child, and provides ongoing lesson materials and support.
