The Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider a request to name the 1000 block of Montgomery Street in Old Town after Alexandria basketball legend Earl Lloyd, the first Black man to ever play in the National Basketball League.

The honorific street name ‘Earl F. Lloyd Way’ would be located in the Parker-Gray neighborhood in the 1000 block of Montgomery Street between N. Patrick Street and N. Henry Street.

A 21-year-old Delaware woman was charged with three counts of felonious hit-and-run and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after allegedly hitting three cars in Old Town.

Niyah Selena Ranson was arrested by Alexandria Police on Sept. 24 at around 6:45 p.m., and is being held without bond in the Alexandria jail.

The Alexandria City Council on Tuesday will consider a proposal to further ease outdoor restrictions for restaurants, retail stores and health and fitness businesses.

Participants will be allowed to set up outdoor dining in parking spaces outside of their establishments, according to a staff report that Council will review at its monthly legislative meeting.

In a year dominated by the coronavirus, Inova Alexandria Hospital was named the overall business of the year in the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce’s annual Best In Business Awards.

The chamber’s annual event, now in its 27th year, was held virtually over the course of eight hours on Friday, Oct. 1. Nominees for the awards rotated into the United Way building in Old Town to receive their awards, which were live streamed on Facebook.

Ringing in the new year in Alexandria is going to be a virtual and in-person experience this time around.

On Thursday, First Night Alexandria announced that due to the coronavirus pandemic its 26th annual New Year’s Eve celebration will be a hybrid event. The alcohol-free event usually draws thousands of people who participate by attending concerts all over the city. Midnight is celebrated on the waterfront with a countdown and a fireworks show.

A 56-year-old man died after a crash in Old Town North on Tuesday, according to Alexandria Police.

Meigs Hodge died after being transported to the hospital, police reported on social media. Police did not say which car he was driving.

Alexandria is experiencing an uptick in violent crime, with police reporting incidents all over the city.

Today, ALXnow broke the story about a West End shootout that left at least two people injured and has so far yielded two arrests. There were also a number of violent crime events that occurred during late night hours over the weekend in Del Ray, as well as calls for shots fired in Old Town and the West End on Friday and Sunday evenings.
