Initial Unemployment Claims Surge in Alexandria

Alexandria’s initial unemployment claims jumped 178% for the week ending Jan. 9, and continued claims jumped 14%.

The Virginia Employment Commission reports that here were 836 initial (first time) claims in Alexandria for the week ending Jan. 9, a large increase over the previous week’s total of 131 claims. That week, which ended on Jan. 2, also saw a 129% increase over the previous week’s total.

Alexandria Restaurant Preps 15,000 Meals for National Guard — “We will be closed today, Saturday January 16th through Thursday, January 21st. Last week, we were honored to be selected to provide meals to the National Guard during inauguration week. Our kitchen will be used to prepare 15,000 meals per day this upcoming week. Alexandria’s Initial Unemployment Claims Jump 129% Going Into 2021

Alexandria’s continued drop in initial (first-time) unemployment claims took a sharp turn over the new year.

The Virginia Employment Commission reports that here were 300 initial claims for the week ending Jan. 2, a 129% increase over the previous week’s total of 131 claims. That’s the most initial claims in the city since the week ending Aug. 1, which saw 336 initial claims.
