The City of Alexandria and Arlington County are joining forces to intervene in the proposed Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy merger case.
The neighboring localities announced Monday (Sept. 28) they filed a joint representation agreement on Sept. 22 to join the case.
Organizations and residents opposed to planned data center development just outside city limits are leading a march starting in Alexandria’s West End.
At 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, the march will run from Aslin Beer Company (950 S. Pickett Street) to the Plaza 500 center (6295 Edsall Road in Lincolnia) where data centers and a proposed substation are planned.
Two restaurants are still temporarily closed and without power since a delivery truck driver hit a power line behind the Shoppes at Foxchase on Tuesday night, Aug. 25.
That’s more than three weeks ago. The fire that destroyed a pickup truck, two dumpsters and fencing has also shuttered La Casa Restaurant (4551 Duke Street) and Hong Kong Express (4545 Duke Street).
About 2,500 homes lost power Monday morning (Sept. 14) in the city’s Arlandria neighborhood and in Arlington’s Long Branch Creek and Arlington Ridge neighborhoods.
The outage was reported around 11 a.m, and was caused by a fallen tree on power lines, according to Dominion Energy. Dominion Energy crews were on scene to assess damage.

Alexandria’s state Sen. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-39) and a handful of other Democratic lawmakers are calling on Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) to convene a special session in September on the proposed Dominion Energy and NextEra merger.
The City of Alexandria is formally intervening in the proposed merger of Dominion Energy with Florida-based NextEra Energy under consideration by state and federal regulators.
The city government has filed as a participant in the case under review by Virginia’s State Corporation Commission. Along with the SCC, the $67 billion merger proposal is under consideration at the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the Public Service Commission of South Carolina, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
No injuries were reported after a delivery truck driver hit a power line behind a shopping center in Alexandria’s West End on Tuesday night (Aug. 25), sparking a fire that destroyed a pickup truck, two dumpsters and fencing.
The fire was reported behind the Harris Teeter (4641 Duke Street) at the Shoppes at Foxchase just before 9 p.m. and was extinguished an hour later. The fire started after the driver of a tractor-trailer making a delivery in the rear of the Harris Teeter “accidentally struck an electrical service drop,” according to the Alexandria Fire Department. No buildings were damaged.

As of 7:45 p.m., Dominion Energy reported 7,821 customers without power across five outage areas. The outages are concentrated around the West End north and south of Duke Street, but they’ve also been reported in Taylor Run, Rosemont and Arlandria.
