As the number of Alexandria residents counted as unemployed dropped below 3,000 for the first time in more than a year, the city’s jobless rate reached its lowest level since April 2025, according to new state data.
A total of 96,006 Alexandria residents were counted in the civilian workforce for the month, with 2,888 seeking jobs, according to figures reported July 1 by the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement.

Alexandria’s Independent Community Policing Review Board wants more questions answered on last summer’s in-custody death of Allan Tucker II.
The board unanimously voted on Wednesday night (July 1) to inform City Council that a report on the Alexandria Police Department response to the incident is incomplete and needs further investigation.
A 28-year-old D.C. man is being held without bond after allegedly stealing more than 150 packages from a UPS shipping facility in Alexandria.
The suspect worked at a UPS facility in Hyattsville, Md., for three months in 2022 and 2023, according to a recently released search warrant affidavit. From April 4 to as recently as June 15, the suspect was captured on security cameras arriving at the UPS facility at 5601 Eisenhower Avenue in rental cars with Virginia tags and entering the building through a bay door.
Alexandria City Council voted yesterday (Wednesday) to deny an extension of Virginia Paving Company’s operations in the West End.
The asphalt production plant, which has been at an 11-acre site at 5601 Courtney Avenue since 1960, had been given Jan. 1, 2027 as a date to clear out operations. The special use permit extension would have allowed it to continue to Jan. 1, 2032.

After an Arlandria apartment complex has been owned by the same family for more than 70 years, the owner has sold the property and retired.
Joann Poladian Belknap recently sold the 213-unit, three-building Glebe House Apartments complex at 25 W. Glebe Road to Maryland-based Rock Creek Property Group for $29.5 million. After managing the 2.5-acre property for nearly 40 years with her Potomac Management Company, Belknap has officially retired and moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
